The Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) is the centre of scientific excellence for the Ministry of Defence. They employ a wide range of scientists, technologists, engineers and analysts – and offer the chance to work on projects that are at the very cutting edge.
Science and technology, however, are often seen as fields that are the preserve of ‘men in white lab coats’. And the defence sector as a whole is also still perceived as having a strong male bias. These perceptions are actually far from the reality at Dstl. In fact, there are many senior women across the organisation – including Dr Frances Saunders, the Chief Executive.
In order to promote themselves as an employer of choice to all, Dstl took space in an International Women’s Month supplement published by The Guardian. As well as explaining who Dstl are and what they do, the ad communicates one of the key benefits of working for the organisation: the amazing flexibility of the careers on offer there.
